Downzoning Of Sauganash Lots Approved By City Council

A few months ago, I posted about an area in Sauganash that is currently zoned RS-3. A developer purchased a property in the 6200 block of N. Keating, and was able to subdivide that parcel into two separate parcels, with plans for the construction of two new single family homes. Nearby property owners were not too happy about this, because they were concerned about the detrimental changes to the density and character of the neighborhood. Subsequently, Ald. Margaret Laurino met with the neighbors to discuss their concerns. Many neighbors wanted the area to be downzoned to RS-1. Ald. Laurino explained to them that an RS-1 classification would be too restrictive, as far as the minimum lot size requirement (pdf-file) is concerned:

Instead, Mrs. Laurino sponsored an ordinance to downzone the area to RS-2, which requires a minimum lot area of 5,000 sqft. This petition was approved by the Chicago City Council on September 27, 2007.
